The science fiction writer Clifford Simak was the first to describe a volumetric display in the form of a clear solid cube, in his award-winning novel Way Station, published in 1963. This type of static display is only now becoming possible with the advent of nanotechnology.

Papers describing the detailed design of such a cube can be found here.

Though the design is currently theory, the pace of nanotechnology is such that a Simak cube could become a practical and affordable consumer device by 2030.
